Northland Trails & Greenways: Connecting Parks, Neighborhoods, and Destinations
From "Bikeways and Trail Plan"
Go to the project
Develop a coordinated, high-quality, well-maintained paved Northland Trails & Greenways Network connecting existing and planned trails across Kansas City’s Northland, North Kansas City, Parkville, Riverside, Platte County, Clay County, and surrounding communities. The goal should be a continuous, recognizable system—not isolated trail segments—that links regional greenways with neighborhood parks, schools, libraries, community centers, historic and cultural sites, transit stops, shopping areas, and other destinations.
The plan should identify major trail spines and close gaps between facilities such as Line Creek, Shoal Creek, North Congress, Brush Creek, Prairie Creek, Southern Platte Pass, Missouri River corridors, and other local park trails. It should also create safe, landscaped neighborhood connectors so residents can reach parks and regional trails without driving.
This requires common regional wayfinding and bike-route signage, maps, safe crossings, and protected bikeways where shared-use trails are not feasible. New development and road projects should preserve trail easements and provide connections to the network. The result should be a well-maintained, safe, and attractive Northland trail system comparable in usefulness and coherence to the streamway network in Johnson County, Kansas.
