Surprised on Statue

From "Southwest Boulevard Improvements: Community Feedback"

Go to the project

I have to say, I am surprised in general that the statue is even being included given the large amount of concern and push back the neighborhood has expressed over the years. There were petitions circulating, many neighborhood chats concerning the questionable history of the statue..... To my knowledge, this conversation with the community was never brought to a resolution. Given what the Hispanic community has just gone through with the César Chávez legacy, I would think we would want to educate oursselves and everyone on the history of the statue, and it's greater meaning to the women in it's original Mexican community before we move forward with installation.

The statue itself is beautiful as artwork. Regardles of what people have associated it with over the years. We need to keep art simple as we approach and complex in our minds.
@Joseph Jimenez It's said to have been associated with Femicide, Domestic Violence, Rape, Slavery, Misogyny- I think we owe it to the community to be sure that's not the symbol we standing behind.
I wrote an OP ED for the KCStar outlining the history of Las Tarascas which is riddled with misogynistic and political history. Most recently, I sent letter to the Mayor and City Council members without any responses. The placement of this piece is a travesty, especially in our current political climate.
