The flow of materials in our community is often a one-way street to the dump – causing harm to our environment during resource extraction, producing GHG emissions during manufacturing, and contaminating our soils and producing methane when buried in landfills. This Climate Action Section focuses on transforming our waste and material systems into a circular economy, giving new life to materials after their first use through reuse, composting, and recycling.

What improvements would you suggest to address how the City manages our WASTE & MATERIALS?

Our waste and materials system will promote climate justice by keeping our environment healthy, clean, and safe for our next generation. This includes addressing illegal dumping, expanding access to composting, and supporting a zero-waste, circular economy.

Patricia Carter1 year ago I love that Kansas City offers curbside recycling however glass is the most recyclable and renewable material, and currently you have to drive somewhere to find a spot to drop it off. What would it take to incorporate glass curbside pickup? Additionally, we need cheaper options for businesses who are wanting to participate in recycling. Currently, some of them have to pay out of their own pocket for these services or go around the city and pay someone like ripple glass. Being a small business owner is tough enough as it is, how can we encourage others to do the same and reward the green thinking and initiative taking?

Brandon Jackson 1 year ago The current number of recycling centers make it inconvenient to recycle something nearby. They're too few, and require one to travel great distances to get to them. We need to create more local recycling centers, so that their distance doesn't become a reason why one is discouraged from recycling.The recycling centers are only open for a limited amout of days during the week. For many, the current time frame is more than convenient enough for them to make it there. For the rest, it's impossible. The recycling centers should be open every day of the week in order to encourage more people to recyle at their own convenience. We can still keep them open during their usual hours.

Ursula Copeland 1 year ago There are many different hhld sizes in KCMO. I believe having a two bag limit contributes to blight/ illegal dumping in some parts of the City. We need to create a system to have families living with 5 or more people in the hhld to get increased trash bag limits. Before I was an empty nester with 5 hhld members, the two bag minimum was never met. Now, a 2 person hhld, I have only one bag a week. I often wondered if we could reduce our blight clean-up bills by allowing more bags/ bins to hhlds in neighborhoods that experience the blight/ illegal dumping issues. We could pilot this concept until the our FIFA event begins to see if it makes a difference.

Tommy Stewart1 year ago We would like to propose a new way to collect trash on our closed end alleys. We would stage them on the street so the trash and recycling people can get to them without backing in and driving out. This would save them time and save our drains in our driveways. The weight of the trucks drag and cave in the asphalt on the closed alleys, as well the area around the drain. This would speed up collection and save or asphalt and drains.

No Nope1 year ago Instead of getting on everybody about how much trash we go through because your landfill is getting too much trash in it help us provide us with resources to lessen the amount of trash that goes to your landfill. You can provide families with discounted trash, compactors, or free trash, compactors OK fine yeah they’re a lot of money but at the end of the day if it’s discounted, you know that’s really going to go along way, and your goal is to less amount of trash then it shouldn’t be a problem for you guys to spend the money on providing families with trash compactors and I can guarantee the families that are going through the excessive amount of trash that we’re going through go out our way and get a trash compactor from you guys Having programs help us be able to afford trash, compactors and easily get them as well for the household, but also providing the houses cause I saw it was one of your goals to have more compost provide them with compost bins. I don’t think those are extremely expensive again it’s logical , provide household with cheap fire pits and give them education on what you can and cannot burn less in the amount of trash and landfills and also make sure you’re installing it so it’s not a dangerous spot. OK I can understand that that might be too much of a liability, but again you still have the trash compactors. You still have composting bins that you can be providing these household so that way we are listening the amount of trash that we are doing , provide for the household that have excessive trash provide it for everybody because maybe there are people who you know go through one thing of trash and maybe they want to help Lessen the amount of waste that was that’s going into your landfill. Providing families with more resources to be able to help you lessen the amount of trash help us.now here’s my complaint advice to you if you want us to respect you guys as a city, you guys need to be respecting us not leaving your roads completely trashed our sidewalks closed and trashed for months on end if the trash company accidentally litters in your yard, pick it up don’t leave it in that yard that’s extremely disrespectful and too they’re littering if my car door opened and the wind had caught on the trash in my car. I would still have to pick it up just as much as when their trashcan thing goes down to the trash to compact trash in there and trash comes out they need to pick it up. You might be saying well we don’t have enough people to take the time to make sure we’re doing that well if you provide trash compactors, you’ll have less trash to have to pick up, which will provide you more time to be respectful to each and every household.

No Nope1 year ago This is seriously the worst city I’ve ever lived in my entire life and I will not recommend living in this city to anybody ever! So first starters, the police are crap over here they don’t care about certain things and they will legitimately tell you to deal with smaller issues ““ yourself when it’s their job to deal with it, the violence, the amount of times I hear gunfire over here the trash company, horrible, horrible trash company, and I will be calling the company to complain. I have lived in several different cities. I have lived in different state as well and I have never had this many issues with a trash company ever. They’re constantly complaining about the little things that really shouldn’t be something that they should be complaining about their constantly leaving their trash cans all throughout the road to where cars are going to hit them constantly littering throughout their neighborhood food and crap. They legitimately took the rappers of stickers and left them in my yard. I have never done anything to these trash man. I’ve never said anything to them. I’ve never done anything to them and for whatever reason literally I had, 20 pieces of paper in my yard from those stickers that they were going through and putting on peoples trash cans I had received one of the trash cans cause I had accidentally done a stupid violation that I think is absolutely retarded and shouldn’t be a violation because literally again, like I said, and all the cities that I’ve ever lived in this was never a violation at all And it is just a dumb little thing that’s just like do your job and shut up and made no sense to me that’s the only thing I ever did and they go around and they dump all the trash in my yard. Are you kidding me? Absolutely ridiculous. The fact that I have to go and call somebody to get these tags or something along those lines because I have too much trash as well And it seems like you have to do it every single time that you have trash what if you just permanently always have extra trash it’s just a dumb system. The whole thing the whole situation is just dumb. Why don’t we worry about people actually being responsible and throwing our trash away instead of nitpicking people about how they’re throwing their trash away let’s applaud the fact that we’re actually throwing our trash away, not nitpick it , especially over here constant trash literally all throughout this neighborhood constant trash all throughout the children’s park we should be plotting the fact that trash is getting thrown away properly not nitpicking it. It’s absolutely ridiculous. I understand the more large issues but when it’s something small and mini school like a lid not being all the way closed because the trash is slightly overflowing the can are you kidding me You don’t have anything better to do or the fact that my diapers were in a bag that wasn’t in another bag what are you searching my trashcan? You don’t have anything to do. This is what we’re paying you guys to do is go through trash to check oh did that person actually follow the rules and Make sure they’re doing properly it’s just frustrating especially coming from a company that doesn’t want to follow rules themselves.
